Goal: To examine primary and secondary sources in order to determine what
historical items to put into a time capsule for our school.

Topics to Consider
1. What should we put in the time capsule?
Think about primary and secondary sources of information. Primary sources include items such as journals, artifacts, diaries, speeches, interviews, letters, photographs, art, maps, etc. Secondary sources include published books, paraphrased quotations, biographies, encyclopedias, textbooks, etc.
2. What should we use to make the time capsule?
Think about materials that will last and are easy to find. Is there anything you can reuse for this purpose? How will you decorate
the time capsule to personalize it and make it stand out?
3. Where should we store the time capsule?
Use a pros and cons list to decide on a location.
4. How long should we wait before opening the time capsule?
Think about a meaningful opportunity to look back at the past. For example, you could choose Gr. 8 graduation, high school graduation or even an important anniversary of the school.

You will work in groups of 5-6 students to discuss and present your information about the above topics. After presentations, we will decide as a class where we will store the time capsules and how long we will wait to reopen them. Each member of the group will be responsible for putting in an artifact or article and writing about it.
